Mission
Our Mission is to provide measuring and testing services that build confidence in trade and promote international competitiveness of Jamaican industries by employing appropriate technology, continuously improving our capabilities, retaining a highly trained and professional cadre of personnel and by being proactive and responsive to customer needs.

Departments

The Metrology and Testing Division consists of four departments: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronics, Analytical Services and Building & Non-Metallic Materials.
Together the departments have over 21 laboratories dedicated to metrology and testing. These labs are equipped with metrology and testing equipment having very high recognition and rating by established international labs such as PTB (Germany), NIST, (USA) and CENAM (Mexico)

Staffing

The unique capability of our facility is matched only by the depth of experience and qualification of its professional staff. The combined experience of our senior engineering metrology and testing staff exceeds one hundred (100) years. All our metrology engineers and technicians have been exposed to training at the highest level internationally at institutions such as the PTB (Germany), NIST (USA) and  (CENAM) Mexico.

Our participation in on
going international measurement programmes ensures that our staff is kept up-to-date in training and available techniques.

Calibration Services

The calibration services of the Bureau of Standards are designed to help users of measuring instrumentsand standards to achieve the highest possible levels of measurement quality and to conform to quality system requirements.

The Bureau, through its state-of-the-art calibration equipment, stable laboratory environment and well trained staff, is able to offer a wide range of calibration services with international traceability and extremely high levels of accuracy.
  Capabilities

Our capabilities range from precision measurements and standard maintenance to measurement procedures and certification of measuring instruments.  Our facilities provide laboratory measurement capabilities in:

AC/DC:  Volt, Current, Resistance
Pressure and Force
Flow & Volume
Temperature
Mass
Dimensional (Linear and angular)
Electrical Energy

The range and uncertainties of each dimension are given on the back flaps.

Instruments and Equipment calibrated

Ammeters, voltmeters, multimeters, frequency meters, etc.
Deadweight testers, pressure gauges/transducers, torque wrenches & force measuring equipment /material testing machines.
Liquid flow meters, volumetric  flasks and measures
Resistance thermometers, thermocouples, thermisters, liquid in glass thermometers, temperature baths, etc.
Mass standards, weighing devices,  etc.
Dial indicators, micrometers, vernier calipers, gauge blocks, precision levels, depth & height gauges and thickness gauges, etc.
Kilowatt-hourmeters, power analyzers, etc.

Testing Services

The Metrology and Testing Division offers testing services covering a wide range of electrical, mechanical, chemical and microbiological commodities to meet the requirements of national and international standards. The Electrical Department is authorized to carry out testing on behalf of the Underwriters Laboratory (UL).

This is an indication of the reputation and confidence in our ability to provide consistent and reliable results from our testing.

Capabilities

The areas presently covered are as follows:

Chemical Testing Analysis: Include Ultra-Violet X Ray, Infrared and Mass Spectrometry in addition to Liquid and Gas Chromatography traceable to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Hydrostatic Testing: Testing of compressed gas cylinders and other pressure vessels, relief valves, pressure regulators, hoses, tubes and pipes, etc.
Appliance Testing Laboratory: Performance testing of: domestic cooking appliances using LPG and kerosene and portable ladders.
Microbiological Testing Laboratory: Aseptic and pure culture technique plate counts and other enumeration techniques, determinative bacteriology and mycology etc.
Energy Efficiency Testing Laboratory: Testing of refrigerators and freezers
Electrical testing: Testing of electrical power cables, transformers, fittings, circuit breakers, panel boards, light bulbs, electrical appliances, water heaters, etc.
Electronic Testing: Appliance protectors, electronic appliances, electronic energy savers, etc.

Certification Mark Programme

This is a specially designed programme aimed at improving product quality and marketability. Under this programme the departments assist manufacturers to obtain the National Certification Mark, signifying products of consistently good quality. For more information on certification please contact the Certification Department.

Service Fees
Estimates for services offered by the departments are supplied upon request. Customers are required to supply instrument/equipment specification when requesting estimates: e.g. type, ranges, class, etc.
